Quito History, From the Yumbos and Quito Karas to the Ecuador Republic

On the skirts of a mountain, in a long fertile and beautiful valley, surrounded by volcanoes and under a splendid blue sky, lays the noble city of Quito.

Quito began almost 2000 years or more B.C. with the arrival of Quito Caras and ancient tribe who came from Central America, this tribes conquered the Quito region and establish commerce relationships with the north and south tribes, they created the "Tianguez" a big market exchange for land products of coast and the ecuador highlands, peru and colombia tribes.

The Yumbos tribe lives in the actual San Antonio and Pomasqui town, where they also create a lot of commercial "trails" to the west coast and cloud forest of actual Mindo.

Some archeological pieces like KITO legend, discover, that tribe created, a complete astronomic and religious system of platforms finding the middle earth imaginary line, without GPS, or other technical tools, 900 years before the French Geodesic mission do it, and the most important fact was they already know the effect of sun and moon in the solstice of spring and summer into the land and life.

This one and other tribes was merging and creating a new "north empire" the Shyris empire, who created a new enemy to the Inca kingdom who conquered the southern Ecuador at the beginning of 1300 A. C.

The incas also known the "middle of the earth" was located at north of their sacred cities, so the threat of KITO empire and the astronomical position creates the main reason to initiate a long conquest war with the shyris empire, this wars finally become and alliance with the marriage of Huayna Capac inca king with the Pacha princess of Shyris empire.

This political alliance brings to Quito a new renaissance, because the inca king state "Cusco at south and Kito at north the jewels of Inca empire" creating a new kito city with the inca architecture, temples and more to make a more strong religion with Sun God, who is more nearly at Quito.

Is important to stop here and make an analysis of word Quito, it means KI = Middle and TO= earth, with in union means "middle of earth". It´s very important to know this to understand the whole pre colonial culture, architecture, mystic powers and religious behavior of pre inca and inca tribes around Quito land.

The spanish conquerors arrive at Ecuador coast in 1531 at Tumbez, actual Peru. 3 years later with a hard struggle with the Inca empire, Rumiñahui, a brother of assassinated king Atahualpa, create a very strong defense in the Quito road to the spanish conquerors. The official foundation of Quito was did by Sebastian de Benalcazar in December 6 of 1534.

This spanish foundation comes with new architects who taken cares of Quito and destroy the ancient Inca and Shyris architecture creating and settle a lot of religious convents, churches and incredible pieces of gold and other precious materials as a support for the God word by the Catholic religion work of "evangelization" in South America.

This incredible massive effort to convert natives and control the new spanish migrants create the magnificent treasure of Quito Historic Center, the amount of gold, wood work, paintings, stones and creative baroque architecture creates a unique space fulfilled with treasures for the world.

During the colony Quito did not have potable water, electrical light, or sewage and the inhabitants had to collect rainwater. Soon it appeared the water carriers, dressed in white trousers, a poncho, and a scarf and a hat heavy cloth. The "quiteños" call this water carriers Aguateros. On their back they carried large containers full of water and they distributed it throughout the city.

At 9 PM the church bells rang, signaling the end of the day. Quito is then a solitary city. Tallow candles in iron lamps illuminated the city paths. After having a thick tasty chocolate espresso and praying, the Quito families went to sleep, while outside on the street serenades could be heard.

During this time, patriotic and wise artist are born: Miguel de Santiago, Goríbar, Caspicara, Maldonado and Espejo, which shared their art and thoughts to form a true capital city.
