Quito Zoo in Guayllabamba

The Guayllabamba Zoo was an initiative from the civil society to conserve the Ecuadorian fauna biodiversity; they concentrate in the conservation of the species in danger of extinction. All of this by means of research projects and programs of education to make people to take conscience about the preservation of our biodiversity. In that way, since March of 1999 the Zoological Foundation of Ecuador manages the Guayllabamba Quito Zoo.

The Quito Zoo located in Guayllabamba has the biggest collection of native fauna in Ecuador opened for visitors.

Most of the animals came from the old Zoo of the Military School and the rest were recovered from the illegal fur trade.

It is located in the town of Guayllabamba that is 29 km North from Quito. The Guayllabamba Zoo includes 45 species of native fauna, which represent different regions of Ecuador, from the paramos up to the tropical rain forest of the Coast and Amazon Jungle and from the Galapagos Islands.

The Guayllabamba Zoo offers to the community an educational experience; they receive each year around 800 educational institutions, which the Zoo becomes into an interactive a didactic space that promotes the value of our fauna.

It also constitutes in a life laboratory were many different research investigations take place to help in the conservation of the Ecuadorian fauna.

Some of the areas that the Guayllabamba zoo promotes are:

  1. Education: to turn the Quito Zoo into an educational space that promotes preservation plans of the Ecuadorian fauna. It is oriented to maintain in good conditions a wide collection that represents the Ecuadorian fauna.
  2. Veterinarian Area: to apply preventive medicine to allow the well being of all the animals.

Species of the Guayllabamba Zoo

Among the mammals of the Guayllabamba Zoo some of the species are: the jaguar, the coated bear and the moor wolf. There are 23 species among monkeys, squirrels, pigs, pumas and others. The only exotic specie is the African lion.

Also there are 21 colorful species of birds among them macaws, parrots, eagles, toucans and more. There is the Andean condor, the biggest flying bird in the world.

In reptiles there is the Galapagos Tortoise that is unique in the world for its size and longevity.
